Weather Intelligence for Renewable Energies Wire

Due to climate change and shrinking fossil resources, the transition to an electricity grid integrating more and more renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, is unavoidable. But, as these sources are strongly dependent on highly variable weather conditions, increased penetration rates may also lead to strong fluctuations in the grid, which need to be balanced. Proper and specific forecasting of ‘energy weather’ is a key component for this.

The COST Action WIRE was set-up 4 years ago as a network of excellence in the field of renewable energies forecasting and its applications. It gathers experts from 31 countries including collaborations with USA, Canada, Austria and Japan, that get together to exchange on their research activities in the field. The goal is advance the state of the art but also provide comprehensive information to different actors like policy makers, end-users and researchers about renewable energy forecasting.
The Action completed its works this year with a successful workshop that took place on October 22nd 2014 at MINES ParisTech, Paris, France.
In this video, Dr. Georges Kariniotakis (Centre PERSEE - MINES ParisTech) and his colleague Dr. Philippe Blanc (Centre O.I.E. - MINES ParisTech) explain us the aim of this workshop, their contributions and the future challenges in the field of Renewable Energies Forecasting. We also had the chance to interview Alain Heimo, Chair of the Action WIRE and Pierre Pinson, professor at the Technical University of Denmark about their point of view on the COST Action.
